Do you remember what you were doing on September 8th this year? Perhaps you spent the day working on homework that you forgot about or went out to eat with your family. In either case, this particular Sunday passed by uneventfully and classes began all too soon again the next day. However, did you know that September 8th is International Literacy Day?
For as long as almost anyone can remember the chapel requirement has always been the same: Students must complete 10 hours, and any and all of those hours may be community service. New hours are in effect as of this semester, Fall 2016. Chapel hours increased from 10 to 12.
There are a number of departments on campus that can help freshmen begin to devise a Professional Development Plan for themselves. As a first-year student, it is important to get connected and focus on creating good study habits, networking, and becoming involved in campus activities. The sooner you engage in your new community, the easier it will be to navigate and adjust. Here are some recommendations:
The Outcomes Assessment at King (known as the OAK) is the “comprehensive assessment” for general education for all students. It is a test of knowledge and skills gained from general education courses. It does not matter whether you did the Core Curriculum at King or took your basic general courses at another institution.
It’s never too soon to plan for your future, especially if you are in the second, third, and fourth year of your college experience. However, you may ask, “What should I focus on to reach my goals? Begin by having attainable and measurable goals identify who can help you and write an action plan – even though you will modify it as you pass through different stages of your professional development.
For some time now, I have been noticing an interesting phenomenon on the campus. Ministry groups are struggling to get people to serve in them; [theater] students are begging others to come and try out for the play so that the theatre department can perform. And, the choir is showing remarkably dwindled numbers compared to previous years. The yearbook (and the KAYSEEAN, for that matter) struggles to find people willing to put a little effort into a publication…
Most students want to “ace” exams, written papers, and oral presentations, so what better place to go than ACE – The Academic Center for Excellence? The ACE, located on the first floor of Bristol Hall, provides tutoring services in writing, public speaking, and math. Also, subject-specific peer tutoring is available.
You are nearing the finish line! What you do in these last few months of the school year is critical. You should, of course, keep your academic record in good shape, but you should also look toward opportunities to develop interpersonal skills.
A healthy social life can be beneficial in both the personal and the professional sense. Let’s see why…
On Friday, March 31, numerous King College students representing the Science, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology and English Departments, headed off to Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee, for the annual Blueridge Undergraduate Research Conference. We were joined by students, from other small colleges across Tennessee.
