By Kelsey Corley, Student Editor of The Kayseean
Want a work-study position that gives you the opportunity to meet new people, grow as a writer, and be part of an amazing team? The Kayseean is always looking for skillful, goal-driven students to join our dedicated staff. Hear from our current staff about their experiences working for the Kayseean!
Austin Leonard: When I started working for the Kayseean in September of 2019 I knew very little about news writing. It was an experience learning a new approach to writing that differs from the academic methods we are taught. While working here I learned how to conduct interviews and was able to meet new people I never would have known otherwise. I think these interviews and profiles on faculty and staff and even alumni of King University are a great way to create connections and find your footing as an individual in the King community. Working for the Kayseean is also a great opportunity to get out there and learn more about the campus, the history, and all the unique groups in the community. Despite news writing not being like academic essay writing it has still given me some new avenues to explore and new methods of research. Overall, learning and reporting alongside the Kayseean team is a tremendously enlightening and valuable experience, even if you don’t plan to go into journalism.
Kelsey Corley: I have worked for the Kayseean since January of 2019, and in that time, I had to relearn how to write. News writing is not like an essay or a research paper, it’s not about complicated jargon and citation methods, but about understanding and communicating what needs to be said. Beyond writing, the student newspaper is a platform for impact and outreach not only to the student community but to the entirety of King University, from the faculty and administration to the alumni. I have been given amazing opportunities in leadership and direction. In short, working with the amazing team of faculty advisors and fellow reporters at the Kayseean provides invaluable experience in journalism and an opportunity for an impact that would not exist as an individual student.
