The Kayseean was initially named “The KCN” for King College News and began as a regular student publication in October of 1933. It was preceded by a student magazine published biannually throughout the 1910s and 20s. The Kayseean has been, as our tagline states, the voice of King Students for over 80 years and is rapidly approaching its 90th birthday in the fall semester of 2023.
However, the King University student newspaper has not always gone by that name. For a few years in the 1950s, the paper was printed under the title “The Little Tornado” to pay homage to the college’s memorable mascot. In the 1990s, the student publication changed its name to “Vox,” or the Latin word for voice, to emphasize its mission.
In the spring of 2018, the Kayseean went on an indefinite hiatus until it resumed as a digital publication in the fall of 2019. It was in this uncertain, in-between time which I was first hired as a reporter. My fellow reporters and I were tasked with rebuilding The Kayseean from the ground up under the helpful guidance of the new faculty advisors, professor Lee Jones and librarian and assistant professor Emily Krug.
During my time as both a reporter and editor, I have been able to work with wonderfully talented and dedicated students who have shaped The Kayseean into what it is today. Now, a team of four writers publishes articles twice weekly on The Kayseean website and manages three social media accounts with plans to expand in the near future. I am forever grateful for all the opportunities and experiences working with the student newspaper has given me; it has made my time here at King unforgettable.
So, to everyone at The Kayseean, I say farewell and best of luck! I can’t wait to see what you do next.
