“Senior slump, senior slide, senioritis. Whatever you call it,” according to Stephanie Weisman from CollegeCountdown.com. While she addresses more so senioritis among high school students, she points out the urge to slack off in your senior year can be overwhelming.
Actually, your final year should be among your most productive when it comes to refining your resume, identifying positions for which you believe you are best suited and in which you are most interested.
In addition, making a list of companies at which you want to work will help you greatly when you are ready to mail your resume. Sign up with job search companies such as Indeed.com, and don’t forget to refresh your LinkedIn.com profiles. Expand your LinkedIn network by adding professionals you know. They could be a good source of job leads.
Here are seven tips to help you stay focused as your college experience draws to a close from Weisman and other sources:
- Remember grades still matter. This is not the time to slack off. Finish strong.
- Think of yourself as an employee-in-training; stay organized.
- Ditch any bad habits that still linger.
- Attend college job fairs; visit Career Services.
- Keep yourself challenged and stimulated.
- Set specific goals – the clearer the better. Follow Zig Ziglar’s 7-Step Plan for Success.
- Attend the monthly Bristol Chamber of Commerce meeting (first Friday of each month at 7:05 a.m.) and get comfortable using your 30-second elevator pitch. This will help you later during your job interview process.
While all these tips are valid, the key is to stay in shape, breathe, and enjoy this final year/semester. You’re about to launch into the next chapter of your life!
