President of the SGA Plans to Increase Involvement in the Community

Kendall Morrison was elected as the President of the Student Government Association (SGA) last spring and has based a large part of her platform on bringing together the King and Bristol communities. One of the projects that she is organizing is King’s participation in an Angel Tree program this coming winter. The program anonymously gifts Christmas presents to families in need. Morrison notes, “My biggest goal is to help King become more involved in the community, rather than just being another college that brings students to town.”

Originally from Culpeper, Virginia, Morrison is a senior double majoring in Criminal Justice and Security and Intelligence Studies. In addition to her role in the SGA, she plays on the women’s soccer team and serves as treasurer for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC). She plans to pursue a career in national security and finds that her work in the SGA has helped her develop leadership experience and team management skills.

The Student Government Association serves as a representative of the student body to the administration. They communicate and advocate for students’ needs and wants. To do this, the President compiles a semesterly report on the status of various student organizations and includes updates or changes brought before the association that would improve the experience both in the classroom or on campus in general.

The SGA is comprised of the President and their cabinet and the Senate, which includes two representatives of each class. The Senate is divided into two committees, one for the chapel and one for the dining hall. These committees are dedicated to improving each of these aspects of student life here on campus. Morrison noted that the more students became involved, the wider the reach of the association can become. “In order to make King better, we need more people involved so that their voices can be heard about what can be changed and improved,” says Morrison.

Some of the ways students can participate are serving as a part of the cabinet or the Senate as a representative of their class. Students can also charter new clubs or join existing ones or help with various community projects or submit ideas or suggestions, via email or to the box hanging just outside the SGA office on the first floor of Maclellan Hall.
