Short Trackin’: NASCAR Race Weekend Roars Bristol to Life  

From September 15th-17th NASCAR made its second stop in Bristol, bringing breath-taking action, bad-fast cars, and drivers yearning for a chance at a championship. The Bristol night race serves as a playoff cutoff race eliminating 4 of the 16 total playoff drivers from competing for a championship. The Bass Pro Shops Night Race would see a surprise winner, major drivers eliminated from the playoffs, and a night full of tire trouble.

King University Hosts 28th Annual Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference 

On Friday, April 1st King University hosted the 28th annual Blue Ridge Undergraduate Research Conference. Originally called the Southeastern Undergraduate Research Conference, this conference attracts widespread regional interest every year. It provides an opportunity for students to present their research in an exciting setting. Undergraduate students from institutions throughout the Southern Appalachian region are chosen to present their research projects in a professional setting surrounded by other researchers and faculty. This year’s conference was a one-day event, with sessions that started mid-morning. There was also a poster session and a reception for all participants and faculty.

Criminal Justice Professor Weighs in on Shopping Cart Case 

The deaths of four women have been linked to one perpetrator, nicknamed the Shopping Cart Killer because of how he leaves his victims in or around shopping carts. The police have arrested suspect Anthony Robinson of Washington D.C., and have charged him with the deaths of the four women found at two separate locations in Virginia. Police also believe that he is responsible for a fifth victim as well.

Biden Withdraws the Vaccine Mandate: What it Means for King  

As of Tuesday, January 25th, the Biden Administration formally withdrew the vaccine mandate for private businesses. The vaccination mandate was originally proposed last November, as a part of President Biden’s Covid-19 action plan, Path Out of the Pandemic. It was to be put into effect on January 4th and executed by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Bristol Says Dump the Dump

The Bristol, Virginia Landfill has come under significant public scrutiny concerning potential environmental and health effects that the waste depository might be inflicting upon the city. In a city council meeting held last October, more than 150 concerned citizens attended to speak up about the issues caused the Virginia landfill. The most widely cited problem is the odor emitting from the landfill and spreading throughout the city, but many citizens also complained of multiple health issues they believe to be caused by these gases, such as nausea, headaches, nosebleeds, and upper respiratory distress.
